Welcome to the world of Miss Gator and the Baby Green Herons –also known as the Mississippi Gulf Coast!

Let MississippiWild take you on a trip through South Mississippi’s bayous, forests and beaches.  Once you get to know  Frogbottom, Mr. Fox and so many others, we hope you’ll come down for a visit – in person!

Now, a lot of people really didn’t realize that Mississippi had a coastline until Hurricane Katrina.  That’s understandable.  It stretches only about 70 miles from the Louisiana state line to the Alabama state line.  The secret’s out now though, that Mississippi has some of the prettiest white beaches around.  That’s not all.  It also has meandering streams emptying into bayous, and bayous meeting the Mississippi Sound.  Add a set of barrier islands a few miles offshore, and you’ve got the perfect nursery – an estuary --  that’s home to baby shrimp, baby flounder, baby sharks and so many other creatures of the sea.  With so many sea critters come the birds and other wildlife who dine on them.

Ah, the beach.  How relaxing, how inviting, yet…how busy!  The beaches of the Mississippi sound are filled with residents.  Some have two legs with webbed toes; some have eight legs and a set of claws, no less.  And, just out a little bit from the sandy shore are the residents who never even have to come up for air.            MORE

Gulf Islands National Seashore was an unexpected and welcome surprise to us

when we first arrived in Ocean Springs, MS three years ago.  Ocean Springs borders the city of Biloxi, MS to the east.  A beautiful little city that’s filled with every type of art you can imagine held another secret.

The National Park Service’s Gulf Islands National Seashore (GINS) stretches from Florida to Mississippi.  Most of the park encompasses islands that begin at Santa Rosa Island in Florida and end at Cat Island in Mississippi.  Areas in Florida are accessible by car, but in Mississippi there is only one section of the park that is accessible by road

--  the Davis Bayou section.  Here are 400 acres of woodlands, marshes and bayous that make you forget that you're mere minutes from town.  This is the home of Miss Gator.

We'll also introduce you to a wonderful place to visit and learn all about the Pascagoula River and what makes it unlike any other river in the United States.  Come with us to the Pascagoula River Audubon Center.....

All of the cities and towns along the Mississippi coast have bayous and marshes intertwined throughout them.  If the conditions are just right, you can smell the bayou.  That’s a pleasant experience for some, but not so enjoyable for others.  Whether you like the distinctive smell of the bayou or not, you’re likely to love the view.  The bayous snake along, winding south to the Gulf.  Marsh grass is abundant, and it’s the perfect hiding place!  Imagine that you were a great blue heron or even a shy clapper rail.  What more perfect place to hide and nap until you’re ready to catch your dinner than hidden in the tail grasses of the marsh.  The bayous and the marshes are home to the fish, lizards and frogs you love to eat.  They are there in abundance, too.  But, you miss a few and some of them venture out to visit those two-legged creatures that live in houses a short distance away.  One of those adventurers is Frogbottom.              MORE
